Since it takes place in the gym, the fitness aspect is also important for MVP. Each session begins with 45 minutes of brisk, low-impact exercise. "There's a lot of circuit training, as well as some kind of martial arts — boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu," says Glazer.
The goal is to challenge those in the program and at the same time make it easier for the injured to continue training. Earlier this year, Dustin Holcomb received devastating news: a man who served in his unit in Iraq had just killed himself.
The news hit close to home for Holcomb, who has struggled with depression on and off since returning from Iraq in 2005. "It was amazing to me that someone had gone through that and couldn't pull it off," Holcomb says.
